Dear First & Second Grade Parents,

I begin by saying how much I appreciate everything you are doing to help your child continue to learn during this stressful time. I have a basic plan for the remainder of the year listed below for you. In each week’s homework pack, I have lesson plans, the pages your child needs for the week, and the answer keys for reading and math. Today I only placed the first week’s homework in the take-home bag, but next week I will have weeks two-seven ready to send home.

Please feel free to contact me by email @ rjohnson@archkckcs.org if you have any questions. I will reply as soon as I can. If you want me to call you back, please include a telephone number.

Homework: There is no need to return any homework to me. Instead, please check off the boxes for each assignment he/she completes, and return the completed assignment sheet with his/her supplies at the end of the school year. I will place the answer keys for the reading comprehension and the math in each week’s homework pack.

Supplies: I placed books, school supplies, and fun packs in your child’s take-home bag to help him/her complete his/her schoolwork. At the end of the school year please return the following items: Completed assignment sheet, First Communion book, all reading books, and the marker board. The rest of the items are yours to keep.

Religion: Each week’s homework pack will have the assigned reading pages as well as the worksheets or creative writing pages that go along with those readings. These pages are meant to be read with an adult. This way you and your child can discuss the information as you go. Once you have read and discussed the assigned pages in the book, please make sure he/she understands the directions on that day’s written assignment. He/she can then do the writing assignment on his/her own.

Reading stories: Each week I will assign up to four reading stories for your child to read. Many of the stories will be found in his/her reading book, but some will be found online at Reading A-Z. You can log into Reading A-Z on the left of side of this web page. The login information is user name: kwolken password: strose

Reading comprehension pages: Each week your child has one set of reading pages. These pages have a reading story and ten-twenty questions about the story. Please encourage him/her to look back in the story if he/she does not know an answer. I placed a copy of the answer key in your parent pack.

Math: For the next seven weeks your child will have a total of three-four pages per day. At the top of each page is a label to identify the type of lesson and the lesson number. The pages labeled Guided Class Practice (Guided), Performance Task Worksheet (Performance), and Problem-Solving Worksheet (P-S) are pages I typically do with the class. They often introduce new skills and new vocabulary. The pages labeled Homework (HW), Class Fact Practice (Class), Fact Homework (Fact), and Lesson Worksheet (Lesson) are usually pages your child will need little or no help completing on their own.

Spelling words: I am not assigning a specific spelling list for each week. Instead, I copied the master list of Dolch spelling words for the primary grades. You are welcome to use the list however you see fit with your child.

Handwriting: I placed your child’s handwriting book in the take home bag. We normally do two-three pages a week, but you can decide how many they do over the next seven weeks. Also, some kids may choose to do some of the pages through the summer. I do not need this book back.

Promise workbook: I’ve been saving the Promise book to do as an end of the year refresher. Use it however you see fit. You may want to use it this summer. I do not need it back.

Art: I made copies of some of my favorite art projects. The majority of the projects call for basic materials found in most households. I thought they may come in handy between now and the start of school.

Again, thank you for your help, your time, and your patience! I pray that your family stays healthy and uses this time together to grow closer to God. I look forward to seeing you all again next fall. God Bless!

Sincerely,

Rae Ann Johnson
